How wonderful that these zealots are praying …as they stir up hostility here at home, endanger Americans, fire up the Taliban, and put our troops in danger.  Nothing says “Christian” like bigotry and hatred:

Gen. David Petraeus said Tuesday that the “Burn the Koran Day” event to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks could endanger U.S. soldiers and civilians in Afghanistan and would be welcomed by Islamic extremists for its propaganda value.

“Images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan — and around the world — to inflame public opinion and incite violence,” Petraeus wrote in an e-mail to reporters.

Petraeus isn’t the only one:

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Tuesday condemned the proposed Koran-burning, calling it disrespectful and saying it could put Western troops in Afghanistan at risk.

Let’s pray that Jones gets a message from god that what he’s doing is outrageously stupid and irresponsible. And not at all Christian.

That would be after he counts the money he is most likely raking in, in support of his condemnation of all Muslims, even though “all” Muslims didn’t, and wouldn’t, attack the United States.

It’s amazing how a group of only 80 extremists can provoke an international response.

Unsexy War Blogging

Guest blogged by Karl Knox

This is how I characterize the Canadian war effort in Afghanistan at my blog. In spite of costs in blood and treasure no one seems to really want to pay much attention to what’s going on over on the other side of the world in our names. It’s a bit different in the U.S. where you guys have two wars going on that the media does its’ level best to avoid covering – except when something crazy happens like the head of the NATO command forces gets loose lipped on a case of Bud Light Lime and disses everybody up and down the chain of command.

Joe Biden’s recent trip (his 5th) was to Iraq to try and help negotiate a power-sharing deal between Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite who is struggling to keep his job after his party lost the March 7 election, and his chief challenger, former premier Ayad Allawi. It has largely been unsuccessful.

Despite his lack of success in arranging such a deal he still managed to express confidence that the Iraqis are “absolutely” ready to take over full responsibility for securing their country as the U.S. proceeds with a planned drawdown of combat forces. As things currently stand in Iraq, twirling towards freedom best describes it – there is still violence, every single day. About 4,400 American service members have given their lives in Iraq. Tens possibly hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died. Today there is a report of bombings targeting Shia pilgrims in Iraq killing 5. Yesterday 64 were killed and 215 wounded in a string of attacks across Iraq…

In the NPR article linked above, journalist Lourdes Garcia-Navarro asks the 64 billion dollar question – Is Iraq a safer country now than it was three years ago? Undoubtedly. He says answering his own question and then continues, …if you walk out the palace doors, and onto the hot dusty streets like I and many of my colleagues do everyday, you’ll meet Iraqis who are worried about what comes next. Many of them ask me, “What was it all for?” As I leave Iraq this time, I have trouble giving them an answer.

He’s not alone.

Remember this from yesterday’s Rachel Maddow Show?

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

So does the Dutch Prime Minister:

Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende attacked on Friday claims by a retired U.S. general that Dutch forces were overrun in Srebrenica in 1995 because of the presence of gay soldiers. [...]

The remarks were outrageous, wrong and beneath contempt,” Balkenende told a news conference.

Yes, in fact they were.

Oh, it gets worse:

The Dutch Defense Ministry called Sheehan’s claims “absolute nonsense” and added that gay Dutch soldiers routinely cooperate with the U.S. military in the NATO mission in Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen called the claim “the bizarre private opinion of someone without an official function“.

Renee Jones-Bos, the Dutch ambassador to the United States, said in a statement, “I couldn’t disagree more” with Sheehan, adding there was no evidence of his claims in the extensive record of research on Srebrenica.

Military unions were equally angry. Dutch news agency ANP quoted the head of the military union AFMP as saying Sheehan’s comments were “out of the realm of fiction“, while the head of the gay soldiers’ group SHK called his comments “the ridiculous convulsion of a loner“.

You might say a few well placed people were a tad offended, mightn’t you?

Somebody alert Donald Rumsfeld. It looks like “old Europe” is more evolved than some of our commanders on the ground.
